E.D.O.L. is a transnational project supported under the Socrates (Grundtvig 2) European funding stream.

The initiative for this project came from the fact that developments in new technologies, especially computing and telecommunications, will transform the opportunities available for adult learners. They will make some forms of learning more accessible to some people, but may risk excluding those who do not have access to computers or who lack confidence to use them.

The project would suggest that learning how to use a computer may help to compensate for some of the problems and conditions which commonly accompany older age. Ageism can lead to the social exclusion of older people, particularly if we understand “social exclusion” to mean more than a simple lack of economic resources. Age is a major discriminating factor in computer use in many countries: demographic researches today show that there are more older people in society than ever before, but the number of older old people using computers is nevertheless small compared with other age groups.

All the partner countries involved in this project share this problem.
